Parentage actions are initiated to identify a child’s biological parent, typically the father. When one parent disputes the child’s parentage, a court will frequently order a paternity test. A person who is found to be a child’s parent has a right to have parenting time (or visitation) with the child and will also have the obligation to financially contribute to that child’s upbringing. Parentage actions typically lead to conflicts regarding who should have custody of the child, the amount of parenting time each parent should have, and appropriate support payments.
